Stop link trackers:
1. Open the Web Inspector Console. You should see the following error.
Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 404
https://lapcatsoftware.com/beacon
This page secretly sent a beacon to my other web site. It could have sent tracking data, but in this case I haven't set up my other web site to receive data, so there's an HTTP 404 Not Found error.
2. Click this link to open in a new tab, then close the new tab and look at the Web Inspector Console. You should see the following error.
Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 404
https://underpassapp.com/StopTheMadness/ping
This is known as "hyperlink auditing". The link has the ping
attribute, which secretly pings my web site when you click. In this case I haven't set up my web site to receive pings, so there's an HTTP 404 Not Found error.
3. Click this link to open in a new tab. You'll see the query parameter ?utm_source
at the end of the URL, which can be used to track your click. It's also included when you copy the link from the contextual menu.
4. Hover over this link then click it to open in a new tab.
The link URL changed! A tracking parameter was added to the end. You can even see the changed URL if you hover over the link again. This is called "clickjacking".

This page demonstrates some features, but StopTheMadness has many more!
